Why Hair Transplant Recovery Starts Before Surgery
Hair transplant recovery doesn’t begin the day of surgery. It begins at the cellular level, often well before the procedure itself. That was the throughline of a recent conversation we had with Dr. Alan Bauman of Bauman Medical, one of the country’s leading hair restoration physicians. Hosted by our co-founder, Rowena Gates, what started as a discussion about hair transplant recovery covered far more ground than we expected.
Dr. Bauman is also the volunteer medical director of Grey Team, a nonprofit working to prevent veteran suicide. That might sound like a world away from hair restoration, but the two are connected by the same idea that sits underneath everything we build: recovery begins at the cellular level, and the environment your cells are working in shapes how well they repair. It is why Dr. Bauman approaches hair transplant recovery as something that starts long before the procedure itself.
What connects a hair transplant surgery in Boca Raton and a brain training room full of veterans? Watch the full conversation below, then read on for the moments worth revisiting.
From Skeptic to “Raving Fan”
We appreciate that Dr. Bauman is candid about where he started. When he first came across NanoVi years ago at the American Academy of Anti-Aging, he was, in his words, “the skeptical one.” He did not adopt it quickly. That is exactly why we find his current position worth sharing. “Now I’m a raving fan, and here’s why,” he says, before walking through how the device became part of his practice.
Most of the people we talk with have already tried a lot, and they hold new technology to a high standard. So do we. We would rather hear from a physician who arrived at his conclusion slowly than one who was easy to convince.
Why Dr. Bauman Uses NanoVi On Patients Before the Procedure
Unlike at many centers, at Bauman Medical, NanoVi is used on hair transplant patients before their procedure. “We use it on every hair transplant patient prior to their procedure,” Dr. Bauman explains, describing the goal as “prepping the patient, prepping the metabolism, prepping the healing process before we even get started.”
This is a lesson we learned some time ago, originally from a stem cell physician who told us that priming the body and getting it ready for success can matter as much as anything done afterward. We have heard the same from dentists preparing patients for oral surgery, and we see it with the athletes who use NanoVi before and after training and competition. At Bauman Medical, NanoVi is on a cart and is moved from room to room as patients are prepared for their surgery.
The principle is simple. Give the cellular environment support going in, and it has more to work with coming out.

The Hair Follicle as a “Canary in the Coal Mine”
When we asked why cellular health matters so much for hair, Dr. Bauman gave us one of the sharpest framings in the whole conversation. Hair follicles, he explains, are among the most metabolically active cell populations in the body, “probably just second only to maybe bone marrow.” He calls them “little mini organs” that are “very responsive to dysfunction.”
Because they are so demanding and so responsive, follicles tend to show trouble early. “It is a canary in the coal mine,” he says. Metabolic dysfunction, mitochondrial dysfunction, whole body inflammation, hormonal shifts, nutritional gaps: the follicle registers all of it. It is why his approach looks past genetics alone to what is happening functionally and metabolically, and why he treats hair loss as a medical condition worth measuring rather than a cosmetic afterthought.
If you want a mental model for what NanoVi supports, this is a good one. When the cellular environment is depleted, the most demanding tissues feel it first.
Where NanoVi Fits: Oxidative Stress and the Recovery Environment
We spent time on oxidative stress, which Dr. Bauman describes as something that rises whenever the body goes through anything difficult, physically or emotionally. This is the load NanoVi is designed to help the body address. Think of it as a kind of general hygiene for the cellular environment.
Here is how we describe the device itself. NanoVi is a patented medical device that supports the body’s natural protein folding process, the cellular function that determines whether repair and recovery machinery can do its job. It supports the body’s repair of oxidative stress damage at the protein level. It does not do the healing for you. It supports the environment in which your own cells do the work.
Stress, Cortisol, and Hair
Stress ran through the whole conversation, and Dr. Bauman connected it directly to hair. Prolonged stress and cortisol exposure can dysregulate hair follicles, he explains, which is why people often see heavy shedding during high-stress periods. Managing stress is not separate from hair health. It is part of it.
He is clear that no single tool solves stress. “You’ve got to attack stress,” he says, pointing to everything from box breathing to guided meditation to vagal support. In his framing, NanoVi “provides a piece of that puzzle,” supporting the body’s response to stress as one input among several. We would add the cellular counterpart: the oxidative stress that comes with difficult experiences is exactly the kind of load NanoVi is built to help the body take on.
Beyond the Clinic: NanoVi and Gray Team
The second half of our conversation moved to something Dr. Bauman clearly cares about deeply. As volunteer medical director of Grey Team, a 501(c)(3) based in Boca Raton, he helps run a free program supporting veterans and active military in preventing PTSD-related suicide.
At Grey Team, NanoVi sits alongside a wide range of recovery and brain training tools, from photobiomodulation to hyperbaric oxygen to PEMF. What caught our attention was the placement. Athletes tend to use NanoVi to recover after exertion, but at Grey Team it lives on the brain training side, where veterans often use it while relaxing alongside their other sessions.
The reason it fits there comes back to stress. NanoVi is designed to support the body’s shift toward a calmer, more parasympathetic state. For veterans carrying a heavy load, support for that shift toward calm is a meaningful addition. As Dr. Bauman puts it, NanoVi is “just another tool in the toolbox to help make these veterans more resilient.”
Grey Team runs lean, and the veterans never pay. You can learn more about Gray Team’s work with veterans at greyteam.org.

Stack for Cellular Synergy
NanoVi is a highly effective stand alone device that complements other approaches. At Bauman Medical it runs alongside PRP, low-level laser light, and a functional, measurement-driven approach to hair health. At Grey Team it runs alongside a full suite of recovery technology. In both places it does the same job: a foundational layer that supports the cellular processes underneath everything else.
We think of other modalities as sources of fuel and NanoVi as a tuneup for the engine, the cellular machinery that actually puts that fuel to work. It is not a replacement for good medicine, good surgery, or the rest of the protocol. It is support for protein functions, the layer everything else depends on.
Key Takeaways
- Dr. Bauman uses NanoVi before hair transplant procedures to help prime the cells for better outcomes.
- Hair follicles are among the most metabolically active tissues in the body, which makes them an early indicator of overall cellular health.
- NanoVi supports the body’s natural protein folding and its response to oxidative stress, the cellular foundation for recovery.
- Stress and cortisol can affect hair, and NanoVi is used as part of a broader stress support strategy.
- At Grey Team, NanoVi is used with veterans as one part of a larger recovery program, often along with brain training program.
- The consistent theme is stacking. NanoVi supports other modalities rather than overlapping with them.
